I Don't Know, Vincent, What Do You Want to Do Tonight?
40" x 30"
1993 Collection of Axel Rohm
For all the drama of Paul Gauguin's two-month stay in Arles with Vincent Van Gogh, we know of no image of him there, neither painting nor fading photograph. To correct this historical oversight, I used a self-portrait that Gauguin had made as part of an exchange with Van Gogh and placed him in front of the terrace cafe that was the subject of a famous work by Vincent. When I looked at the painting years later, I realized what was so obviously missing, and immediatly looked for the late self-portrait that summed up Vincent for me. Then I changed Gauguin's gaze so that he addresses the question directly to his friend.
